THIS WEEK IN KICKSTARTER COMICS (1/23/23)

Two of this week’s campaigns are launching in conjunction with each other and in honor of the Lunar New Year. These are A Tiger’s Tale and Shadow Ghost, by Patrick Lugo and Kurtis Fujita, respectively, who are also the co-host of the YouTube interview series The Comics Fu Show. They’re doing something really neat to promote the campaigns: They’ll be bringing in experts from around the world to participate in “Ask the Kung Fu master” Q&As on their show, designed to help comic creators “punch-up” their action scenes and fight choreography.  Shadow Ghost #1 by Kurtis Fujita –  launching 1/23 Twitter: @fujitakurtis The Kung Fu Comic by a Kung Fu Master Young Kit Kitano searches for the truth behind the legendary Kung Fu hero, Shadow Ghost. His journey leads him to study Martial Arts in Chinatown with the reclusive Master, Sifu Sung. There, he will learn the true essence of Kung Fu and through a bit of luck and a twist of fate, become part of the legend himself. A Tiger’s...

REVIEW: 'Hitomi' #4 by H.S. Tak, Isabella Mazzanti, and Valentina Napolitano

HITOMI #4  Writer: H.S. Tak Artist: Isabella Mazzanti, Valentina Napolitano Layouts: Nicoletta Bea Letters: Rob Jones Publisher: Image Comics Release Date: January 25, 2023 Cover Price: $3.99 The time of war has come to the land. Hitomi spurns Yasuke's warnings and joins a military campaign, hoping to make a name for herself. To Yasuke's dismay, she does... Score:  ★★★★1/2 (4.5/5) I'm a sucker for the mentor-and-apprentice dynamic of fictional storytelling. Comics especially has mined this trope with great results in the form of superheroes and sidekicks. 'Hitomi' by  H.S. Tak, Isabella Mazzanti, and Valentina Napolitano has its own take on that relationship with its own twists and motivations but it works in a compelling fashion. It works as a fascinating historical drama featuring Yaskuke, a man of African origin who served as a retainer and weapon-bearer to the Japanese daimyō, and a determined young woman training to be a superior warrior to avenge the mu...

'Swamp Thing' Meets 'Robocop' in New Dystopian Thriller 'Junk Rabbit' by Jimmie Robinson

Fan-favorite creator Jimmie Robinson ( Bomb Queen ) puts a new spin on a dystopian tale of climate disaster in the upcoming Junk Rabbit . This all-new ongoing series will launch from Image/Shadowline Comics in April 2023. In Junk Rabbit , a new hero rises from heaps of consumer waste, mass homelessness, and devastating climate change. Some call the hero a myth, an urban legend, but others know that it’s the Junk Rabbit come to life—and now it’s on a bloody path of revenge against those who created it. “The iconic heroes of today will not reflect the future we inherit. Junk Rabbit was born from the idea that the trash we discard today creates the heroes we deserve tomorrow, said Robinson. "I’m excited to explore this series through Image/Shadowline Comics because they understand that new ideas and stories creates the comics we deserve tomorrow.” This new enviro-thriller explores a worst-case scenario that alters not only our world and the heroes that literally rise from its ash...
