QUICK REVIEW: 'The Silver Coin' horror anthology has been a nice injection of monthly horror from some of the best writers in comics but it's really been a showcase of co-creator and sole artist Michael Walsh. The twisty gory stories bound together by the titular object are illustrated with Walsh's expertise in pacing, framing, and design. Consider Walsh the director and photographer setting the tone and tension in each panel, how and what the "camera" focuses on, and how the lighting maximizes the look of terror and madness on a person's face. Walsh is a master of horror and 'The Silver Coin' proves it.
This month Ed Brisson brings the story of three burglars who fall apart when the homeowner unexpectedly dies mid-heist. Things turn from bad to worse as the cursed Coin calls the shots. For the first time, the mythology begins to lose its randomness as the Coin is summoned back to its owner. There is a larger more connected universe being alluded to with a mysterious central figure pulling the strings.
'The Silver Coin' #3 delivers the chills and thrills as expected with Brisson and Walsh while also opening the mythos behind the Coin. The anthology continues to be a horrific little treat by some of the best in comics. You should read it for Walsh's spine-tingling art alone.
