QUICK REVIEW: Uriel stays resilient and continues to fight despite not unlocking her magical powers yet. She's literally getting beaten and keeps coming back for more specifically against an angry Captain Samael. But behind that rage, there's a story and issue three explores Sam's motivations. 'The Least We Can Do' continues to be a character-driven story where we're still getting to know the people who are resisting an oppressive force in this quirky fantasy. Iolanda Zanfardino is more concerned with fleshing out her leads with this clash of characters, the optimistic neophyte against the troubled veteran warrior. It's a compelling dynamic that's made all the more interesting by Elisa Romboli's colorful energetic illustrations that are anything but boring. Issue four promises more external action against the force they've been preparing for the last three issues. Up to now, the series has felt very insulated and small in scope despite the imaginative setting and potential for a grand battle. It's been a slow build but few creators inject so much heart and emotion in a story better than Zanfardino and Romboli do so it's not surprising that the focus has been on character development and not spectacle. The ending changes everything so big things are about to happen. 'The Least We Can Do' finds the heart in a fantasy world preparing for war with fully formed characters and an elevated sense of emotion.
