Disney's Legendary SCAR Roars in New Tale!

The Lion King Villain's Secret Story Revealed by Chuck Brown!

The Pride Lands are home to many, but few are as fearsome as the one and only Scar! Brother of Mufasa and uncle of the young Simba, Dynamite is proud to present an untold chapter from the iconic character's legacy alongside writer Chuck Brown (Bitter Root, Aquamen), artist Trevor Fraley, and more.

This captivating new story is set within the world of The Lion King between scenes from the iconic original film. With Simba's iconic birth, it has fully set in that Scar is never meant to be king while his brother and nephew inhabit Pride Rock. Unable to accept that fate, the imposing, corrupt lion begins to formulate devious plans. This journey will bring him face-to-face with the mysterious and fan-favorite shaman Rafiki. What more could be revealed in this first-ever spotlight on the character?

Fans can learn more about this chapter in the tapestry by picking up Disney Villains: Scar #1 this April and preordering it with their Local Comic Shop starting in late January and February. The series debuts with a special extra-sized 27-page story, but sticking at the regular cover price of just $3.99! Due to scheduling, Dynamite can also note that a collected edition of this series will not be available before at least the summer of 2025.

For writer Chuck Brown and artist Trevor Fraley, this is a special story to tell. The film and the complex character of Scar made a major imprint both in their youth and as evolving creators.

"I'll never forget the first time I saw the original film," said writer Chuck Brown. "I've watched the whole movie over and over again to prepare. We had to find a way to make our story fit in seamlessly with the film. This story also needs to add something of value to the original story."

Artist Trevor Fraley adds, "I was born the same year it [the film] came out, so it's literally always been a part of my life and was most likely one of the first movies I ever saw. I want to be able to make the characters you know keep their iconic looks, while also keeping them fresh and interesting for the story we're trying to tell. I actually learned how to draw a lion at a young age thanks to the original film, and it feels kind of surreal to be breathing life into something I drew so much inspiration from."

“Chuck and Trevor’s vision of Scar is miraculous," adds editor Nate Cosby. "More than a simple origin, their tale takes place during the events of The Lion King, delving into the twisted psychology of a character whose thirst for power takes him to unthinkably dark depths.”

Fans keeping track of all the colorful characters in the Lion King mythos will be excited to see some interact together but never do in the film. Which characters from Mufasa's inner circle may have actually thought Scar could be a better heir? Brown and Fraley will also be introducing the new characters of the Wake, a pack of winged foes whose scheming and cunning are second only to Scar. Dynamite invites fans to discover a whole new side of the Pride Lands.

In addition to the thrilling original story and Fraley's fitting artwork, Dynamite is proud to present a set of gorgeous variant covers for fans and collectors on the title. Jahnoy Lindsay (Hawkeye, Firefly) leads the pack with a pitch-perfect take on the protagonist. Other covers are contributed by Karen Darboe (Bloodline: Daughter of Blade), Erica Henderson (Squirrel Girl), Junggeun Yoon (Vampirella), Gene Ha (Top 10), and David Nakayama (X-Men), with more to be revealed!

DISNEY VILLAINS: SCAR #1 is solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ February 2022 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in April 2022. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies of the issue with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!
