INTERVIEW

Zach M. Stafford

(Author self-portrait)

We were fortunate enough to email Zach some questions and he was gracious to respond. 'Good Comics for Bad People' is a hilarious read, chockful of 'Extra Fabulous' greatest hits in an onslaught of absurdly funny comics. This hardcover would make a great gift this holiday season. Check out what Zach had to say:

1. You’ve created so many hilarious and irreverent comics, what was it like revisiting your past work in compiling them for the hardcover collection?

Thank you, that is very kind of you to say! It was an awful and strange experience, as much of the comics were drawn by a younger, more worse version of myself. Each comic brought back its own painful memory of a former me I have long since murdered and replaced and buried beneath the barn inside my soul.

2. Your work calls to mind Gary Larson’s ‘The Far Side’ and Wayno & Piraro’s ‘Bizarro.’Where do you find your inspiration for some of these witty outlandish comics?

What an amazing compliment, thank you! My main inspiration comes from my peers, folks like Flork of Cows, Cyanide and Happiness, Mr. Lovenstein, Toothy BJ, to name a few. I am inspired by them because I want to be better than all of them, and I strive every day to win. When I’m dead I want to look God in the eye and hear him say “You win the game of niche adult-oriented hyper-sexual 4-panel webcomics”.

3. Is it hard to self-edit, to determine whether a comic works or you’ve crossed a line?

I am in the very fortunate position of having a good-sized Patreon audience whom I can heap terrible comics on and force them to tell me if the comics are okay to post publicly or not. I recommend that everyone get a good-sized Patreon audience for this exact purpose. It is freeing knowing that I can post anything and everything I can imagine and some people will reflexively clap.

4. In this day and age, it seems hard to compete with the madness of the real world when creating a satirical reflection of it. Has it been harder or easier to mine the real world for material?

I try not to make too many comics based on current events or the real world. Whenever I do I usually feel greasy and uncomfortable because my opinions are not well formed and might mislead even less informed people. I am also very scared that revealing my truest inner thoughts will lead people to discover that I am actually currently a bald moron instead of the handsome genius artist that I imagine people think I am right now.

5. ‘Good Comics For Bad People: An Extra Fabulous Collection’ is destined to be a great gift to give out this season. What do you hope people come away with reading it?

I hope that people read this book and are filled to the brim with so much confusion and perplexity that they don’t have any brain space for whatever was stressing them out before and they can just sit somewhere quiet and have a good cry. Everyone feels way better after a good cry. Thanks for having me!
