QUICK REVIEW: 'The Last Mermaid' #2 continues the beautifully illustrated story of a mermaid trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic future in a world covered in sand, water is scarce, and her time is running out. With her mobile fishbowl damaged and water toxicity rising she has to get over a ridge to find some freshwater before it's too late. Derek Kirk Kim's skill as an animator shows through with wonderfully paced visuals that tell the story with very few words. The transition from safe confines to impending danger is so well drawn out that the reader is placed in a vice without even realizing it until it's too late. And because it reads so fast you'll be cursing Kim's name because you want to see what happens next immediately. Each issue is a gem; for some readers, it may be best to wait for the trade to take it all in. Either way, 'The Last Mermaid' is a magical comic by just how well-crafted it is.
