The Energon Universe continues to build with one hit after another. Following the success of other G.I. Joe entries like Duke and Cobra Commander, Scarlett explodes on the scene with an action-packed spy operation built with layers of intrigue. Who better to write this than Kelly Thompson who penned Black Widow and Birds of Prey. She was made for this.
Tasked to infiltrate the mysterious Clan Arashikage and gather intel regarding the power players in attendance at a fancy party with possible ties to human trafficking, Scarlett finds it increasingly harder to observe and report when things go haywire. The capable and headstrong agent goes into action and along with Marco Ferrari's beautifully choreographed fight sequences the issue soars with bone-crunching combat. Amid the chaos, Scarlett can't help but chase her long-lost friend Jinx who's caught up with the Clan. Issue one is off and running at a breakneck speed but Thompson skillfully weaves in flashbacks that explain the connection between Shana and Jinx. If you need a comparison, this is more 'Mission: Impossible' than Bond. It's a shot of adrenaline.
Besides the ton of action, Ferrari's versatility shows when alternating from the present day to the past. A completely different aesthetic occurs during the flashbacks infused by Lee Loughridge's dreamy pastel colors. It's transportive but intimate at the same time. Scarlett gets the character study she deserves.
Kelly Thompson ushers in an explosive addition to the Energon Universe with a rousing spy adventure in 'Scarlett.' No one but Thompson and Ferrari could have brought the legendary G.I. Joe staple to life any better.
