The deadly dark fairy tale from masters of folk-horror Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, Invasive) and Christopher Mitten (Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.) writes a frightful new chapter . . .

Sisters Sommer and Winter are shaken and bewildered in the wake of a goblin horde smashing apart their family's vacation cabin and absconding into the night with their parents. But the mysterious, jagged, hulking sword they stumbled on as they fled into the forest offers the young girls surprising strength, agility, and a vicious means to fight back. When they seek shelter with an old couple in the woods, they learn the truth behind the monsters, the fairies, the withering realm known as the Autumn Kingdom, and the deadly sacrifice it requires . . .

QUICK REVIEW: 'The Autumn Kingdom' by Cullen Bunn, Christopher Mitten, and Francesco Segala is a fantastic new fantasy series that wasted no time getting into the action and that pace continues in issue two. Picking up where the first issue ended, Sommer and Winter are left to battle a horde of goblins after they kidnapped their parents. Armed with a huge enchanted sword that empowers them to fight like warriors they slice and dice their way through the scary creatures but are no closer to finding their parents.

They come across a quaint couple nearby in the hopes of shelter and they insist they're safe but something unsettles the sisters. While more is revealed about their parents' situation the peace doesn't last long. Bunn's script propels the girl's adventure by facing one obstacle after another and the art from Mitten and Segala illustrates a grand cinematic battle with sweeping blades tearing through torsos of terrifying mystical creatures. Segala's coloring is elegant and warm with a richness that gives the page a regal look that fits perfectly within the fantasy genre. The interspersed use of scenes and exposition from the father's book parallels the girls' heroism, which begs the question, what did the father know about this fantastical world before now? Taylor Esposito's varied lettering and sound effects differentiate the scenes nicely providing important distinctions between the story, the book, and impending danger.

'Autumn Kingdom' is an enthralling fantasy series under Bunn's masterful storytelling. Fast-paced, exciting, and mysterious, the series has a lot to offer and many secrets left to unfold. Aided by the captivating art of Mitten and Segala, this adventure of two undaunted sisters versus evil forces is hard to resist.
