The indie sitcom made its first splash earlier this month at San Diego Comic-Con during the Making A Maverick: Creating Art Outside The System panel, moderated by Kevin Smith, who called the trailer for the independently made comedy “Fucking funny”. Creator and star Cheyenne Ewulu was there to speak about the journey of building the project outside the traditional studio model with the support of a passionate online community.

The Comic Shop is a workplace mockumentary about a group of friends doing their best to keep their local comic store afloat by any ridiculous means necessary. The cast features Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia, Craig of the Creek), Shanae Cole (Grown-ish), Grayson Niles (The Goldbergs), and Cheyenne Ewulu.

Produced under Ewulu’s Awkward Virgo Productions, the series was fully crowdfunded via Kickstarter, raising over $200,000 to bring the six-episode season to life. It is now one of the most-backed TV projects in Kickstarter history.

The series will officially premiere August 29, 2025 on YouTube, free to watch on the Awkward Virgo TV channel:

Ahead of the premiere, the cast will appear at AnimeNYC on August 24th for a panel featuring an exclusive sneak peek of Episode 1. Cast members Cheyenne Ewulu, Zeno Robinson, Shanae Cole, and Grayson Niles will be joined by panel moderator and pop culture commentator Fantastic Frankey (Frankey Smith).
