In The Phantom #1, writer Ray Fawkes and artist Russell Olson reintroduce readers to Kit Walker, the jungle’s guardian and one of comics’ longest-standing heroes. The issue wastes no time establishing both the mythos of The Phantom and the immediate danger threatening the people under his protection.
The story begins with Walker recounting recent events to his partner, Diana. His visit to the isolated Bandar village, a community long sheltered from the outside world, is interrupted by the discovery of smugglers encroaching on the jungle. Their presence signals a larger threat: Asif Singh and the Singh Brotherhood, a group with the resources and ruthlessness to endanger not just the village, but anyone who stands in their way. From there, the narrative pivots quickly to action, with The Phantom forced to take up arms to defend his allies.
Fawkes’ script moves at a brisk pace, offering just enough exposition to ground newcomers without slowing down the momentum. It’s an approach that benefits the issue, avoiding the heavy-handed setup that often plagues first installments. The result is a story that feels immediate, energetic, and accessible, capped by a strong cliffhanger that raises the stakes for what comes next.
Olson’s artwork complements this tone, striking a balance between a classic comic aesthetic and modern sensibilities. The Phantom himself is depicted with a timeless quality, while the backgrounds and action sequences lend the book a cinematic scope. Letterer Taylor Esposito further enhances the reading experience, ensuring dialogue and narration flow smoothly while emphasizing the tension and rhythm of the story.
As a debut, The Phantom #1 succeeds in both honoring the character’s legacy and setting up a new storyline with contemporary appeal. It’s fast-paced, visually engaging, and welcoming to readers who may be encountering The Phantom for the first time. With its mix of action, atmosphere, and reverence for the source material, this is a strong opening issue that lays the groundwork for a compelling series.
Verdict: A confident and energetic reboot that delivers action and accessibility in equal measure. Fans of classic adventure comics and anyone looking for a sharp new series should should give The Phantom a read.
