AJ Mendez, Aimee Garcia, and Ildy Modrovich Team Up for EAST SIDE SAINTS Comic Series

(PRESS RELEASE)

Ignition Press revealed the news at ComicsPRO’s Annual Meeting in February of this year that three superstar creators would be working with the publisher: New York Times bestselling author, screenwriter, and pro wrestling legend AJ Mendez (Crazy Is My Superpower, Blade of the 47 Ronin); actress, director, screenwriter, and producer Aimee Garcia (Dexter, Lucifer, The Walking Dead: Dead City); and showrunner, screenwriter, and producer Ildy Modrovich (Lucifer, Californication, Tulsa King).

As part of the Ignition Sequence leading up to Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC), Ignition Press is thrilled to reveal that this trio has co-created a brand-new comic series, East Side Saints.

Fifteen-year-old Alex Gomez isn’t legally allowed to see R-rated movies without an adult, but she's just inherited the family’s demon-hunting business. Armed with a bruja (witch) Abuelita and zero training, this irresponsible Latina teen must battle monsters on the streets of East LA... but a family secret will make things even more difficult for her. This is East Side Saints: a coming-of-rage story.

The three co-creators' vision is being brought to life by artist Amilcar Pinna and colorist Amanda Grazini, the pair currently working on Sicko with writer Tini Howard.

"East Side Saints is a story about becoming your own hero,” said AJ Mendez. “When the system fails, power is corrupted, and demons roam the streets, the East Side Saints will get their hands dirty in order to save Los Angeles. They might not be the heroes you asked for, they might make things worse, they might even charge you for saving your life, but damnit they're all you've got, and I hear they take Venmo. This story is a love letter to the misfits, the troublemakers, and the rule-breakers, whose rough edges are the weapons that will save the world."

"Angels, demons and the chupacabra were a Tuesday in my family,” said Aimee Garcia. “Growing up in a multigenerational, superstitious Latino household, my cousins and I were taught by our grandparents that if we ever saw a demon at the bus stop, we should take off our shoe and beat the bastard with it. East Side Saints introduces a modern, Latina heroine and her janky, ragtag crew. This story is for the underdogs, the scrappy fighters … for anyone battling their own inner demons. But, East Side Saints is really about hope, because if these trainwrecks can survive, anyone can."

"Turns out everything I love — mythology, badass women, monsters, found family, a little chaos — fits perfectly in a comic book. Who knew?” said Ildy Modrovich. “Writing East Side Saints with Aimee and AJ—two of the most badass and fearless ladies I know—has been an utter creative joy. Ignition has been incredible partners, and Amilcar and Amanda—our intensely talented artist and colorist—are bringing this world to life in ways I genuinely didn't see coming. Ain't gonna lie...I'm kind of obsessed with the whole thing."

Mendez and Garcia co-founded Scrappy Heart Productions, which is dedicated to elevating diverse perspectives with universal themes and making underdogs the heroes of their own stories across all media. The pair have previously co-written the comic series Day of the Dead Girl from Magma Comics and IDW Comic's GLOW and Dungeons & Dragons. After making Lucifer one of Netflix’s highest streamed series of all time and a beloved fan-favorite franchise, this will be Modrovich’s first comic book series.

East Side Saints is set to debut in mid-2027. Fans can sign up at EastSideSaints.com and be the first to get updates and behind-the-scenes access. The three co-creators will appear at Comic-Con International for an exclusive signing on Saturday, July 25th at from 3:30pm – 4:30pm in room 33C.
