Mad Cave Offers Fresh Beginning to 'The Great Death' With an All-New English Language Edition

The Stunning French Bande Dessinée Finds New Life this Winter.

This winter, Mad Cave Studios is pleased to bring to readers The Great Death Vol. 1 (December 23, 2026; 9781545832196; $19.99 US), the English translation of the original French bande dessinée, Le Grand Morte, by authors Régis Loisel and JB Djian, illustrator Vincent Mallié, with colors by François Lapierre, lettering by Bryan Senka, and translated by Nanette McGuinness.

Originally published in 2007 by Vents d’Ouest before they were acquired by French comics giant Glénat, the stunning series is rising back to life in the North American market just in time for the holidays.

In The Great Death, a chance breakdown opens the door to a hidden world—and forces one young woman to decide how far she’ll go to protect the fragile balance between two realities.

When a broken-down car strands a stressed-out student in the countryside, Pauline’s quiet study retreat turns into something far more dangerous—and magical. Taken in by the reclusive Erwan, Pauline discovers a hidden realm of “little people” living alongside our own world, unseen but deeply entwined with it. As the fragile balance between worlds begins to fracture, Pauline and her friend Gaëlle are drawn into a perilous journey that will test their courage, loyalty, and sense of responsibility. Blending contemporary fantasy with urgent themes of ecological balance and social justice, this spellbinding tale reveals how even the smallest lives can change the fate of two worlds.

When asked about the development and worldbuilding of the story, artist Vincent Mallié commented, “The Great Death is a magical and environmentally conscious adventure that takes readers by the hand and leads them into this fantastic world, which I had immense pleasure creating.”

A dreamy fantastical journey that takes a walk on the darker side of fantasy and explores the devastation of humanity’s effects on the ecological sustainability and interconnectedness of the world, The Great Death is perfect for fans of Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga. The first volume will be available in stores and online December 23, 2026. Preorder it now from your favorite comic shop, bookstore, or directly from Mad Cave.
